The camera (nearly always) never lies

Hello, I really like today's card but I really don't like the way the photograph turned out. Perhaps it was because I used a daylight lamp to counter the late evening orange sunlight or maybe it's because it is a black card but whatever the reason I think it just looks a bit rubbish.

Up close and personal the "chalk" marks are subtle and add detail to such a CAS card where as through the lens it just looks like I had mucky fingers. I find photography one of the hardest things about blogging. How do you translate the crafty gem sat in front of you into a photo that really shows it off just like they do in the magazines. My hubby says, as it's sort of in his line of business, it comes down to lighting, equipment, the photographer and the editing........ that doesn't really help me (sorry sweety).

I think I I've improved from day one but I'm also aware I'm not the best when it comes to "taking pictures". I'm so envious of people who stage their crafty bits beautifully with a colour coordinated spool of twine or the occasional lace doily......I've tried this but it just ends up looking like I've tried taking a photo on my desk before tidying up.

I guess for now I'll stick with what usually works; my Canon compact, a sheet of scrapbook paper as a background and a copy of Photoshop Elements that I kinda know how to get round. I'd love to hear your thoughts or suggestions on taking crafty photos for blogging... but for now hear is the aforementioned representation of what really is (honest) quite a nice card- designed using the cue card from CASology- "apple"

Thanks for stopping by, sorry about the rambling - and happy crafting (and photographing)

Rebecca x

p.s. I forgot to mention the school themed card also ties in with today being the first day that the kids are back in school- wish me luck!

  1. I know just too well what you say about photography being the most difficult thing in blogging!! your pics are so crisp and clear, I really struggle with my images. I depend on daylight to take any pics but most often than not end up clicking when the sun is about to set,LOL !!
like this card and the sentiment !!

  2. You are so right - I often say that blogging about crafting is completely different from crafting -you have to be techie and a photographer (I'm neither!) But I do think your card looks great! Love the pop of red on the black board! Thanks so much for playing along with us at CASology this week!

  3. Overhere in the Netherlands you have to search for a school with a blackboard, they all have digiboards now ;) Your card looks fabulous!
Most of the time I'm scanning my cards because I really can't take pictures of it, if I do, all my cards look crooked!

  8. You made me laugh with your comment about adding props to your photos and it looking like your desk before tidying up! LOL! I hear you on that one. I tried adding things too and gave up! Maybe someday...
I love this clean and simple design! You made the chalkboard look so real and I love the simple, popped up image!

  10. I do love this card! Great layout, love the chalkboard technique and the sentiment!

I love to use black and white papers and find that both are challenging to photograph. (really all my cards are challenging to photograph) I think this photograph came out beautifully. Usually I take a bunch of pictures, load them, look at them, decide none of them are good, reset the card with different background, move the lighting, take more pictures, and repeat. Then when I finally get a picture I like (don't hate) I have to edit and write a blog post. Thanks for sharing your frustration - you are not alone!
